His and Her Perspective on Glowing Through Marriage, The Arts and Family ft. Kytia and Jerrell
Kytia and Jerrell have been married for 10 years. Together, they host a podcast, Glowing Through It, and it's a "his and her perspective" on an array of topics, from social media, their faith, and current hot button issues.
In episode 16, we get to hear a “his and her” side of their marriage story. We hear how they knew each other were "the one", how God has called them to be "fire starters" or pioneers in new creative mediums, the conviction of saving themselves for marriage and the importance of family in a world and culture that is trying to abolish the family unit. This is a timely episode in the times we are living in. Kytia and Jerrell's platforms are a light in a dark world and I pray you're encouraged by their ministries.
“the one”
Her perspective: Kytia was 21 when she prayed that the Lord would help her meet her husband by age 22. She met Jerrell a few days before turning 22. She lived in Hawaii yet met her husband on an art tour in LA.
When she first landed in LA, never having been there, she heard the Holy Spirit tell her, “This is home” and that had never before been a dream of hers. She didn’t know how to get there but marrying someone who lived out there helped make that transition.
She asked God for a few clear signs if Jerrell was the person she was supposed to marry. She wanted to wait for her husband, didn’t want to waste time in catching feelings, but God gave her that sign she asked for. Confirmed.
His perspective: Her story is more about confirmation. His was more about a list or qualities he desired in a wife. He knew he was saving himself for marriage but he didn’t know how to prepare for a wife and through prayer and fasting felt this list came.
“As a man you read Scriptures that husband “finds” a good thing in a wife, asking himself how do I “find”? She wasn’t at my church, wasn’t at the coffee shop, wasn’t at college, I’m not going to bars and clubs to meet her, how do I meet her? How do I righteously seek?” The answer was doing what I’m called to do. God brought Kytia to him.
purity
In a day where everything revolves around sex in dating, both Kytia and Jerrell had an unconventional approach to sex, saving sex for marriage.
Before coming to this conclusion, Jerrell says he went on a search of what he believes scripturally and it was no longer blind faith. If the Bible said waiting for marriage is the best option, then he was convinced it was the best option. People reach out to them inquiring about that — young guys who want to save themselves, how to do that? Other guys like this exist and the media and the devil want it to seem unattainable but more guys need to talk about it and not suppress it. It is worth the wait.
getting to collab and get creative together
Her perspective: “It seems the trend in our life has been being the fire starters, being the pioneers of things which can be very stressful and isolating”. Kytia shares she fought this for a long time wondering, “What’s wrong with us? This thing that is promised just goes away.” She identifies with being a storyteller using many different mediums.
“The collab is the blessing. God saw beyond, ‘Oh you get along and you get married.’ You guys are going to build something greater and you’ll see.“
They’ve started Youtube channels and had to get creative and be resourceful with what they have together. Their careers and ministry have become one because everything they do is to glorify God.
His perspective: Jerrell is a graphic illustrator, publishes books/comic books, anything visual arts he’s had a hand in. “I can give my POV but not advice because everyone’s story is different.
Freelance requires self-motivation, spending yourself for hours, going out and getting clients, etc. On working together, there’s the stigma working with family not being a good idea and for some that might be true but for them, it fit but was definitely still a learning curve. However, there has to be a level of respect. Communicating well too. Working on a project together is a microcosm of marriage
family
The family should be a place we can run to for refuge and not something you need to escape from.
Her perspective: “ The biggest thing that helped in my marriage was recommitting my relationship to God. If you have a healthy understanding of respecting a higher power and wanting to obey not just because I don’t want to go to hell but because He’s so great…” that’s the key.
In the media, we have a power struggle of who’s in charge. Dangerous things to say — “If you want to do it, better get a woman to do it.”, “My husband is like a fifth child, he can’t do anything right” and the husband is saying “She’s the old ball and chain, I’m never going to have fun again”. But what a privilege to start a family! Not everybody has that. Helps to be appreciative.
His perspective: “A big part of being alive is relationship. God didn’t have to make mankind where we had to relate with each other but He did. Relationships are valuable. God wants us to be close to people and be in fellowship. It matters first though, that vertical relationship with God is right and that impacts every other horizontal relationship here on earth.”
Having gratitude first and having relationship with God in check will help every other relationship. This makes our marriage a safe haven.
